Port Saunders RCMP arrested a 57-year-old Quebec man on Saturday after responding to a report of a suspected impaired driver near the community of Pond Cove.

Just after 9:30 p.m. on June 20, police received a report of a possible impaired driver on Route 430 near Pond Cove. Officers patrolled the area and located the commercial tractor trailer unit partially off the roadway. Open alcohol containers were observed just outside the vehicle. The driver showed signs of impairment and failed a roadside breath test.

The 57-year-old Montreal man was arrested and returned to the detachment in Port Saunders, where he provided additional breath samples in excess of the legal limit.

His commercial vehicle was seized and impounded. The man was released from police custody and will appear in provincial court on September 15, 2026, to answer to charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and impaired operation over 80 mg%.

Commercial vehicle operators carry a heightened responsibility every time they get behind the wheel. Impairment by alcohol or drugs can significantly reduce judgement, reaction time and decision-making ability, putting the driver and everyone sharing the road at serious risk. Given the size and weight of a commercial vehicles, the consequences of impaired driving can be catastrophic.
