A 72-year-old man had his licence suspended after Mary’s Harbour RCMP caught him driving 61km/hr over the posted speed limit on Tuesday afternoon.
At 12:50 p.m. on July 14, a Mary’s Harbour RCMP officer conducting proactive patrols of Route 510 in the community of Lodge Bay observed a vehicle travelling at 91 km/hr in a 30km/hr construction zone.
Police conducted a traffic stop, and the driver — a 72-year-old man — was ticketed for excessive speeding, and his licence was also suspended.
Drivers are reminded that posted construction zone speed limits and traffic control measures remain in effect whenever signage is displayed, regardless of whether workers are present and visible to you. Construction zones often contain hazards such as heavy equipment, uneven road surfaces, narrowed lanes and modified traffic patterns that require motorists to reduce their speed and remain alert.
RCMP Newfoundland and Labrador urges motorists to slow down and plan ahead. The extra minute or two that you might save by speeding is not worth it. There are penalties like fines, having your license suspended or seeing your vehicle seized and impounded. But there are far worse consequences: you could seriously hurt yourself, your passengers, other drivers, or in some cases, your speed could cause life-altering injuries or cost someone their life.
