Baie Verte RCMP arrested a 29-year-old man on Saturday evening after responding to several calls about a suspected impaired driver. The man refused to comply with a demand for a breath sample, and now faces three Criminal Code charges including impaired operation and mischief.
Around 8:15 p.m. on July 25, officers and local volunteer firefighters responded to a call about a possible impaired driver and located the described vehicle off the road on Route 410. The driver left the scene of the on foot, prior to police arriving at the scene, and a bag containing alcohol was located near the vehicle.
Witnesses provided a description of the driver, who was quickly located walking down the road nearby. He showed signs of intoxication and was taken into custody.
The 29-year-old man was transported to the detachment where he was assessed by Emergency Medical Services personnel. No injuries were reported. Officers provided him with a demand for a breath sample as part of their impaired driving investigation, but he refused to comply
Additional calls about the same vehicle and driver indicated that before the crash, he had also struck an unoccupied, parked car before fleeing the scene.
The driver was released from custody, and will appear in court in September 2026 to face charges of impaired operation and failure or refusal to comply with a demand, as well as a charge of mischief under $5,000 in relation to the earlier hit and run collision.
Refusing to comply with a demand issued by police as part of an impaired operation investigation is a criminal offence. If convicted, this offence carries the same penalties as a charge of impaired operation.
Impaired drivers place themselves and all others who share the roadway at an unacceptable risk of serious injury or death. If you suspect a driver is operating a vehicle while impaired, please call 911 immediately.
