Bonavista RCMP arrests man for breach of conditions, assaulting officer

Bonavista RCMP arrested 39-year-old Jonathan Peters of Knight’s Cove on Saturday after he was found violating his court-imposed release conditions. 

On July 25, police conducted a curfew check on Peters and confirmed that he was not complying with a release order requiring him to remain at his residence by a specified time each night. Officers located him walking on a road in the community nearby. 

When police attempted to arrest him for failure to comply with a release order, he was uncooperative, resisting arrest, assaulting police officers and causing damage to the police car used to transport him to the detachment.

Peters was held in police custody until his court appearance, scheduled for July 28, where he will answer to the charges of: 

• Assault on a police officer 
• Resisting/Obstructing a peace officer
• Mischief – damage to motor vehicle 
• Failure to comply with release order conditions 

RCMP officers across the province regularly conduct checks to ensure individuals are complying with conditions of their release from custody. Ensuring compliance with court-imposed conditions is a key part of reducing repeat crime and enhancing public safety.
