The Nova Scotia RCMP is joining police agencies across Canada in support of Operation Impact 2025, a national public awareness campaign aimed at making Canadian roads the safest in the world. By promoting safe driving behaviours, RCMP officers hope to prevent crashes and collisions, save lives, and reduce injuries on Nova Scotia’s roads.
From October 10 to 13, RCMP officers across the province will be focusing enforcement and education efforts on the behaviours that put drivers, passengers, and other road users at most risk: impaired driving (due to alcohol, drugs, or fatigue), aggressive driving, distracted driving, and failure to wear a seatbelt.
“According to the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, most collisions are not ‘accidents’, they are the result of choices made behind the wheel,” says S/Sgt. Ben Parry, RCMP Traffic Services. “This year’s theme, Safety is in MY hands, reminds all of us that road safety starts with personal responsibility.”
Every year, motor vehicle collisions claim the lives of approximately 2,000 Canadians, seriously injure 10,000, and leave 165,000 with injuries. These numbers reflect the need for continued awareness and enforcement.
“Whether you're heading to the cottage, visiting family, or running errands this long weekend, we’re asking all Nova Scotians to make safe choices,” said Sgt. John White, Southeast Traffic Services Unit Commander. “Put your phone away, buckle up, slow down, and drive sober. These decisions are in your hands.”
“Long weekends should be about friends and family, not tragedy,” he continued.
Operation Impact takes place over the Thanksgiving long weekend, a time when traffic volumes increase and the risk of collisions rises. RCMP Nova Scotia encourage everyone to take a hands-on approach to road safety.
Let’s work together to make Nova Scotia’s roads safer for everyone.
