The RCMP’s Provincial Internet Child Exploitation Unit has charged two men with offences related to child sexual abuse and exploitation material (CSAEM) and seized ten firearms after a search warrant execution.
In April, the Nova Scotia RCMP Provincial Internet Child Exploitation Unit began an investigation after receiving information from an electronic service provider indicating that CSAEM was being transmitted on its application. The transmissions were associated to an address in Mulgrave.
On May 27, the Internet Child Exploitation Unit and RCMP Digital Forensic Services executed a search warrant at a residence in the 0-100 block of Tower Rd. in Mulgrave. Other units supported the search warrant execution, including the RCMP Emergency Response Team, RCMP Tactical Support Group, Inverness County District RCMP, and the Inverness-Richmond Street Crime Enforcement Unit.
During the search, officers seized electronic evidence, unsecured firearms, and ammunition.
William John Winchester Simpson, 38, of Mulgrave, has been charged with Possession of Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Material (2 counts) and Transmission of Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Material (2 counts).
Joseph Harris Simpson, 48, of Mulgrave, has been charged with Possession of Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation Material and Unsafe Storage of Firearms.
Both men were released on conditions pending a first court appearance scheduled for July 27 at Port Hawkesbury Provincial Court.
The investigation is ongoing.
In Nova Scotia, it is mandatory for citizens to report suspected CSAEM; anyone who comes across it must report it to police. Failure to report could result in penalties similar to those for failure to report child abuse set out in the Child and Family Services Act.
