RCMP charges man with sexual offences against youths, seeking additional victims

The Lunenburg District RCMP General Investigative Section (GIS) has charged a man with sexual offences involving youths and is seeking to identify additional victims.
On July 13, Kings District RCMP initiated an investigation after learning that a youth who had been reported missing had been staying at the home of a 38-year-old Chester Basin man.
Through the investigation, officers learned that other youths had also spent time with the man, either at his home or on trips away from the area. Lunenburg District RCMP GIS subsequently assumed lead of the investigation.
On July 29, with assistance from the Criminal Intelligence Service of Nova Scotia, Lunenburg District RCMP, including the Street Crime Enforcement Unit, the RCMP Provincial Internet Child Exploitation Unit and RCMP Digital Forensic Services, investigators executed a search warrant at a residence on Croft Rd. and arrested the man. Electronic devices were seized for examination.
Matthew Joseph Mercer, 38, has been charged with:
- Sexual Assault (four counts)
- Sexual Interference (four counts)
- Luring a Child
Mercer appeared in Bridgewater Provincial Court on July 30 and was remanded into custody until his next court appearance on August 6.
Investigators believe there may be additional victims. Anyone who believes they may’ve been victimized by Mercer is encouraged to contact police.
There’s no time limit on reporting sexual offences. The Nova Scotia RCMP recognizes the lasting impact these crimes can have on victims, regardless of how much time has passed, and support services are available, including through RCMP Victim Services.
