Arctic Bay man charged with attempt to commit murder

On May 08, 2025, Arctic Bay RCMP responded to a complaint of a male discharging a firearm in the community. One resident received a non-life-threatening injury. Upon attendance, the RCMP was fired upon by the suspect.

Additional resources were deployed by Nunavut RCMP along with the issuance of a public Alert advising residents to shelter in place.

Shortly thereafter, the suspect was arrested without further incident or injury to the suspect or anyone else. As a result, the shelter in place was lifted.

Tony Akoomalik (age 25) of Arctic Bay has been charged with:

  • Two counts of Attempt to commit Murder, Section 239(a) C.C
  • Two counts of Discharge firearm with Intent, Section 244(1) C.C

Akoomalik was remanded into custody and flow to Iqaluit, Nunavut. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 3, 2025.
