Iqaluit RCMP warn public of online scam

Iqaluit RCMP have received multiple reports of a scam that is circulating throughout Nunavut. The scam involving Facebook “Sell and Swap” where a person is posing to be selling country food. After receiving funds, the sellers are not providing the food and blocking the buyer.  

Iqaluit RCMP offer the following tips to help avoid becoming a victim of online fraud:

  • Never send an e-transfer prior to picking up the item / food,
  • Be wary of sale or items that seem “too good to be true”,
  • Select a public place to pick up the item like a busy parking lot, and
  • Do not provide personal information, like your date of birth or banking information to anyone online, even those you are buying from.

If you are a victim of a fraud, contact the Iqaluit RCMP at 867-979-0123, and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center at 1-888-495-8501.
