Iqaluit man charged in relation to “Shelter-in-Place” alert

On September 27, 2025, at approximately 12:50 a.m, the Iqaluit RCMP responded to reports of shots fired from a residence on Tasilik Street. Police issued multiple “Shelter-in-Place” advisories on the Alert Ready System and on the Nunavut RCMP’s Facebook page.
The Iqaluit RCMP’s, Containment Team was able to contain the suspect in his residence. Police also utilized a drone and crisis negotiators were deployed. An Emergency Response Team (ERT) from Ottawa, Ontario arrived to assist in the operation. At around 4:30 p.m, the lone suspect was taken into custody. No injuries were reported.
On September 28, the Iqaluit RCMP charged Jaco Shoo Kownirk (age 38) with:
- Five counts of Assault with a Weapon, contrary to Section 267(1) C.C
- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, contrary to Section 88 C.C
- Utter threats to cause death or bodily harm, contrary to Section 264.1(1) C.C
- Five counts of Discharge an air rifle at a peace officer, contrary to Section 244.1 C.C
- Mischief, contrary to Section 430(1)(c) C.C
- Use an imitation firearm while committing an indictable offence, contrary to Section 85(2)(a) C.C
- Breach Probation, contrary to Section 733.1(1) C.C
Kownirk was remanded into custody, and his next court appearance is scheduled for October 21, 2025, in Iqaluit, Nunavut
