Pangnirtung man charged with breaking multiple windows

On September 19, 2025, at around 9:27 p.m., the Pangnirtung RCMP received a complaint that Joanie Akulukjuk had committed a theft at one of the local grocery stores. Shortly after the initial complaint, police began receiving multiple reports, stating Akulukjuk was throwing rocks and damaging windows to buildings and vehicles.

Police locate Akulukjuk as he began throwing rocks to a RCMP residence. After a brief foot chase, police were able to arrest Akulukjuk.

The Pangnirtung RCMP has charged Joanie Akulukjuk (age 36) with:T

  • Theft under $5000, contrary to Section 322(1)(a) C.C
  • Resist Arrest, contrary to Section 129(a) C.C
  • Mischief, contrary to Section 430(4) C.C

Akulukjuk was released from custody, and his next court appears is scheduled for November 3, 2025, in Pangnirtung, Nunavut.
