Man sentenced in Délı̨nę drug matter

Police in Délı̨nę are updating the public on the outcome of a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act investigation that resulted in the arrest of a man in Délı̨nę last summer.

As per an August 2024 press release, on August 22nd, 2024, officers of the Délı̨nę detachment arrested a man at the airport after receiving a tip that he was arriving in the community by plane and had warrants for his arrest. After taking the man into custody, police located approximately 77 grams of crack-cocaine in his possession. The man was subsequently charged and remanded into custody.

On March 31st, prior to a scheduled trial, Billy John McNeely of Yellowknife pled guilty to one count of Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (cocaine), contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

McNeely was sentenced to two years plus one day in custody, a 10-year firearms prohibition order and was ordered to submit a DNA sample to the National DNA Databank.
