The NT RCMP Crime Reduction Unit arrests two after shots fired in Fort Resolution

The NT RCMP Crime Reduction Unit have arrested two individuals in Fort Resolution after receiving reports of gunshots.

The Territorial Crime Reduction Unit was operating out of Fort Resolution over the weekend. On Saturday, April 26th, at approximately 10:00 pm, they received a call regarding possible shots fired at or near a residence in the community.

Members attended the residence and spoke with the occupant, but couldn’t confirm the allegations.

Approximately 10 minutes later, report of two males leaving the residence was received, and RCMP members dispatched to locate them. Upon verifying their identity, both males fled on foot.

They were both apprehended without incident.

As a result of the investigation, a 16-year-old youth from Saskatoon, SK, was charged with multiple offences:

  • Possession of restricted firearm with ammunition, contrary to section 95(1) of the Criminal Code;
  • Possession of a weapon contrary to order, contrary to section 117.01(1) of the Criminal Code;
  • Carrying a concealed weapon, contrary to section 90(1) of the Criminal Code;
  • Careless use of a firearm, contrary to section 86(1) of the Criminal Code;
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm when knowing its possession is unauthorized, contrary to section 92(2) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of property obtained by crime less than or equal to $5000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code;
  • Uttering threats to Property/Animals, contrary to section 264.1(1) of the Criminal Code;
  • Failure to comply to a probation order, contrary to Criminal Code 733.1(1);
  • Resists or wilfully obstructs a peace officer, contrary to Criminal Code 129(a).

Yohannes Tekle, 21, from Edmonton, AB, was charged with:

  • Resists or wilfully obstructs a peace officer, contrary to Criminal Code 129(a);
  • Uttering threats to Property/Animals, contrary to section 264.1(1) of the Criminal Code.

A loaded handgun, $955 in cash and drug paraphernalia were seized by police. Both accused were held in custody pending future court dates.

The NT RCMP developed and implemented a Divisional Drug Strategy in 2023 and has since strengthened its capacity to tackle illicit drug trade in the Northwest Territories through specialized programs, such as the Territorial Crime Reduction Unit, with support from the Government of the Northwest Territories.

This investigation is one of many examples of the positive impact of these specialized programs have had on combating illicit drug trafficking in the territory.
