The P.E.I. RCMP Provincial Traffic Services Unit Prince District RCMP and Provincial Highway Safety Officers conducted Mandatory Alcohol Screening on commercial vehicle drivers crossing the Confederation Bridge onto P.E.I. yesterday, March 13, 2025.
The checkpoint was located at the Borden-Carleton Scale House parking lot. More than 100 drivers were screened for alcohol and there were no warnings or failed tests.
The New Brunswick RCMP Traffic Services Unit also conducted a check point on their side of the bridge without incident.
Mandatory Alcohol Screening (MAS) authorizes police to demand a breath sample from any driver, whether or not they suspect alcohol impairment, as a tool to deter impaired driving.
“We know impaired driving in P.E.I. is one of the top three leading causes of fatal crashes. That’s why we conduct Mandatory Alcohol Screenings to both stop and deter impaired drivers;” said Cpl. Gavin Moore, P.E.I. RCMP Media Relations Officer.
Mandatory Alcohol Screening has proven to be a useful tool in ensuring public safety and the Provincial Traffic Services Unit conducts numerous checkpoints throughout the year.
POLICE MADE TWO ARRESTS AT SEPARATE CHECKPOINTS
Police officers also conducted separate non-mandatory checkpoints in the area and arrested two impaired drivers.
At a checkpoint in Borden-Carleton by 4:00 p.m., police arrested a 21-year-old man for impaired driving by cannabis.
At a checkpoint in Borden-Carleton by 4:20 p.m., Police arrested a 62-year-old woman for driving impaired by cannabis.
If you see a suspected impaired driver call 911.
