On April 11, 2025, in Charlottetown Provincial Court, Johnathan Trainor was sentenced to five years in custody for taking a hostage without the use of a firearm.
Trainor also received additional concurrent sentences: four months for uttering threats, two months for mischief, six months for assault with a weapon, and six months for attempting to escape lawful custody. Charges of forcible confinement and a probation order were stayed.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on August 1, 2024, at the Provincial Correctional Facility in Milton Station. Queens District RCMP responded to a report of an assault with a weapon that took place earlier that afternoon. During an educational class, an inmate—later identified as Trainor—grabbed a facility employee and threatened them with a piece of glass in an attempt to escape.
Another inmate intervened and managed to stop Trainor before correctional staff regained control. Fortunately, the employee was not injured.
