Grade 12 students at Morell Regional High School gained an eye-opening perspective on the consequences of impaired driving during a recent visit from the PEI RCMP and MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Kings and Queens PEI Chapter.

As part of the interactive presentation, students learned first-hand about the effects of impairment and the critical importance of making safe choices behind the wheel. Officers guided students through a mock roadside sobriety check, where they were asked to walk a straight line — first without impairment, and then while wearing special goggles that simulated various levels of intoxication. The activity illustrated how even small amounts of impairment can dramatically affect balance, vision, and coordination.

Students also took part in a roadside sign recognition exercise, using goggles that distorted their vision to show how alcohol and drugs can slow reaction times and impair decision-making.

The presentation was delivered in collaboration with MADD Kings & Queens PEI, whose mission is to stop impaired driving and support victims of this preventable crime. MADD Canada representatives spoke about the life-changing impacts impaired driving has on families and communities across the country, and encouraged students to plan ahead and make safe, sober choices — especially as the holiday season approaches.

Students also tied red ribbons to a wreath — a symbolic act of remembrance and commitment to drive sober and encourage others to do the same this Christmas season.

"Impaired driving continues to be one of the leading causes of road fatalities in Canada, and education is a powerful tool in prevention," said Sergeant Lisa Jones, PEI RCMP Traffic Services. "It's encouraging to see students taking this message to heart and pledging to make safe decisions."

MADD Canada's Red Ribbon Campaign, which runs through the holiday season, reminds Canadians to never drive impaired and to always plan a safe way home. PEI RCMP continue to work year-round to prevent impaired driving through education, enforcement, and community partnerships — helping to make Island roads safer for everyone.
