Prince Edward Island RCMP is pleased to welcome the new PEI Policing Standards introduced by the provincial government last week. It provides a clear framework to ensure consistent, professional, and accountable policing across the province. These standards reflect the shared commitment of PEI law enforcement agencies, government, and communities to uphold public safety and strengthen trust in policing services.
As PEI’s Provincial police service since 1932, the RCMP has long operated under established national operational policies and strict standards. These policies and standards are found in the RCMP Act and reinforced through our federal, specialized, and contract policing mandates. The PEI RCMP will incorporate the new policing standards into our current existing policies.
PEI’s new policing standards will see all police in the province trained to a specific standard, having access to specific tools needed in policing and following similar processes and policies. Provincial policing standards have been implemented in many other provinces and the RCMP have incorporated them quickly thanks to our established operational and standards practices.
As threats to public safety evolve the RCMP will continue to be at the forefront of Canada’s efforts to protect its communities. We remain committed to working closely with our municipal policing partners, provincial partners, Indigenous communities, and local stakeholders to ensure that policing on Prince Edward Island is modern, accountable, and resilient in the face of 21st-century challenges.

These standards reflect the values we have long upheld as Canada’s national police force. The RCMP has well-established operational policies and national standards for aspects like training and equipment, that guide our work every day. The adoption of PEI’s policing standards will help all police agencies on the island work hand-in-hand and reinforces our shared commitment to delivering effective, modern policing for Islanders.
