At 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, PEI RCMP Traffic Services Corporal Jamie Parsons was making routine patrols on Route 2 in the Cascumpec area when the speed radar in his patrol car went off. The target vehicle he spotted was travelling at 147 km/h in a 90 zone. Despite activating his lights and siren and attempting to stop the vehicle, pursuit was broken off for safety reasons. Cpl. Parsons issued a call across his radio advising other members in the area of the incident. Cpl. Parsons was able to identify the vehicle and its driver, who had previous interactions with police.

Shortly thereafter, another East Prince RCMP member also had the same vehicle on radar now doing 189 km/h. Once again, despite activating emergency equipment, the target vehicle sped off and it was not safe to pursue.

PEI RCMP shared the information on this incident with other police services on the Island and later that evening Summerside Police Services found the vehicle and was able to arrest the driver. A 51-year-old man from Elmsdale has been charged with flight from police and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Quotes

This is yet another great example of how the partnership and collaboration of police forces can work to keep Island roads safe. RCMP members in all the detachments conduct highway traffic safety patrols and we regularly work not only with other police agencies, like Summerside Police, but with Parks Canada, Provincial Public Safety, Conservation Officers and others in combined efforts to keep roadways and trails safe across the Island. Speeds like these are uncommon, and we are grateful no one was injured in this incident.

Sgt. Lisa Jones, PEI RCMP Traffic Services Unit lead
