Meadow Lake CTSS seize cocaine during seatbelt traffic stop

Meadow Lake CTSS charge three individuals after cocaine destined for Witchekan Lake, SK, is located during a seatbelt traffic stop on Highway 55.

On November 1, 2025, Meadow Lake Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan CTSS stopped a vehicle on Highway 55 east of Meadow Lake, SK, after noticing a passenger of the vehicle was not wearing their seatbelt.

After examining the information of the three occupants of the vehicle, the Meadow Lake CTSS police officer informed the occupants they were detained on scene for the purpose of a drug investigation.

The Meadow Lake CTSS police officer searched the occupants of the vehicle and located suspected illegal drugs and packaging consistent with drug trafficking.  All three occupants were arrested.

The police officer then searched the vehicle and located 54 grams of suspected cocaine, drug paraphernalia, one scale, three cellphones, several baggies and one metal collapsible baton.

As a result of continued police investigation, all occupants of the vehicle have been charged with criminal offences.

40-year-old John Duchak, from McCreary, MB, is charged with:

  • one count, possession for the purpose of trafficking, schedule I, section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
  • one count, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, section 88(1) of the Criminal Code; and
  • one count, possession of a prohibited weapon, section 92(2) of the Criminal Code.

34-year-old Jason Sawitsky, from Witchekan Lake First Nation, SK, is charged with:

  • three counts, possession of weapon contrary to order, section 117.01(1) of the Criminal Code;
  • two counts, failure to comply with an undertaking condition, section 145(4)(a) of the Criminal Code;
  • one count, identification fraud, section 403 of the Criminal Code;
  • one count, obstructing a police officer, section 129(a) of the Criminal Code.

44-year-old Sharleen Scott, from Witchekan Lake First Nation, SK, is charged with:

  • one count, possession for the purpose of trafficking, schedule I, section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

John Duchak, Jason Sawitsky and Sharleen Scott are all scheduled to appear in court in Meadow Lake, SK, on January 5, 2026.

Meadow Lake CTSS police investigation determined the illegal drugs were destined for the Witchekan Lake area, in Saskatchewan.

Meadow Lake RCMP assisted the CTSS police officer at the scene.

The Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan (CTSS) is a province-wide traffic enforcement unit consisting of police officers from the Saskatchewan RCMP and municipal police services.
