Five men have been jointly charged with point firearm, assault with a weapon, and kidnapping using a firearm.
On April 14, 2025 at approximately 8:45 pm, the Yukon 911 Operations Centre received several emergency calls that were tracked to a location in the Kulan subdivision area. An investigator attended the area and quickly determined the need for additional resources. The scene was contained and the Critical Incident Program Team was engaged, including the Emergency Response Team. Eight adult males were at the property. Six males were arrested without incident. One of the males who was arrested was taken to hospital and admitted for injuries that had occurred prior to police arriving at the property.
Two men who were considered victims in this matter were taken to hospital, treated and released. Neither of these two males were Yukon residents. They have both since returned to Vancouver.
A search warrant was obtained and the residence was searched on April 16, 2025. The Whitehorse General Investigation Section and the Crime Reduction Unit conducted a search of the property and the residence and located a loaded semi-automatic assault rifle, a disassembled handgun and three bags that each contained individually wrapped substances believed to be crack cocaine.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are expected. Five men were jointly charged with pointing a firearm, assault with a weapon, and kidnapping using a firearm: Abdulahi Khadar Sahal (34), Sumit Khumar Chandhar (27), Bret Darrell Demchuk (21), and John Joseph Klemenz (49). The fifth man charged passed away in an unrelated event after his release from custody. His death is a Yukon Coroner’s Service investigation.
The injured male who was admitted to hospital was released from custody but he remains the subject of continued investigation.
The accused individuals all initially appeared in court on April 15, 2025. Mr. Chandhar was released on a court order on April 15, and Mr. Klemenz was released on a court order on April 23.
Mr. Demchuk and Mr. Sahal remain in custody. The next court appearance is scheduled for May 14, 2025.
