The Whitehorse RCMP General Investigation Section has laid charges in the investigation involving a motor vehicle collision where a vehicle hit an athlete using a handcycle.
At approximately 9:57 pm on June 7, 2025, a hand cyclist, traveling southbound on the Alaska Highway, was struck from behind by an SUV heading in the same direction. The cyclist, who has consented to being named in this update, Darryl Tait, was training on his handcycle when he was hit and dragged a distance by the vehicle. As a result of the collision, Mr. Tait sustained serious injuries.
Following the investigation, 39-year-old Ashley Kirkpatrick, also known as Ashley Godin, has been charged under the Yukon Motor Vehicles Act with three offences: driving carelessly, operating a motor vehicle without a licence and operating an unregistered vehicle.
Ashley Kirkpatrick is scheduled to make her first court appearance on December 2, 2025, in Whitehorse.
The RCMP would like to thank the witnesses who came forward to police and the members of the public who stopped to assist Mr. Tait at the scene.
