Yukon RCMP is advising motorists to take extra precautions during the current period of extreme cold. Temperatures well below freezing can significantly impact tire air pressure, increasing the risk of tires coming off their rims.
When temperatures drop, the air inside tires contracts, causing a decrease in tire pressure. Underinflated tires can lose their seal against the rim, especially when combined with sudden movements or icy road conditions. This can lead to dangerous situations, including loss of vehicle control.
In the past three days, the Whitehorse RCMP Detachment has received a significant increase in motor vehicle collision reports. The primary contributing factors include:
- Following too closely
- Driving too fast for road conditions
- Rear windows not completely cleared of snow and ice
These factors, combined with mechanical issues like underinflated tires, increase the risk of serious incidents during extreme cold.
Safety Tips for Drivers:
• Check tire pressure frequently: Cold weather can reduce tire pressure by up to 1 PSI for every 5°C drop in temperature.
• Inflate tires to manufacturer specifications: Refer to your vehicle’s manual or the sticker inside the driver’s door.
• Inspect tires and rims: Ensure tires are properly seated and free of damage.
• Clear all windows: Visibility is critical—remove all snow and ice from every window before driving.
• Ensure headlights and taillights are on: Proper lighting is essential for maximum visibility in winter conditions.
• Recheck tire pressure when the weather warms up: Temperature changes can affect tire pressure.
Motorists are encouraged to carry a tire pressure gauge and check their tires before every trip during extreme cold. If you notice a tire losing air or coming off the rim, do not attempt to drive—seek roadside assistance.
