Valleyview RCMP investigating homicide – Update #2

The Alberta RCMP Serious Crime Branch advise that an arrest has been made in connection with a June 22, 2025, homicide on Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. On June 29, 2025, a 35-year-old individual was arrested in British Columbia and charged with the second-degree murder of 28-year-old Isiah Cordell Cardinal.

The individual has been remanded into custody and will be transported back to Alberta where an additional hearing will take place to determine his next court appearance.

Despite this arrest, the Alberta RCMP Major Crime Unit continues with the investigation.

Valleyview RCMP investigating homicide - Update

RCMP Serious Crime Branch is actively investigating the homicide which took place on June 22, 2025, on Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. The investigation has identified a suspect. A 35-year-old individual, of no fixed address, is wanted for the second-degree murder of Isiah Cardinal (28), a resident of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.

RCMP is seeking public assistance in locating the 35-year-old individual.

The individual is described as:

  • Blue eyes and black hair
  • 5 feet 8 inches tall and 200 pounds
  • Multiple face tattoos
  • Last seen wearing dark pants, a white shirt with hood, and a mask

The individual is considered armed and dangerous. Do not approach him. The individual was last seen on Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.

Valleyview RCMP investigating homicide

On June 22, 2025, at approximately 6:15 a.m., Valleyview RCMP responded to a call on Sturgeon Lake First Nation. Upon arrival, one person was located deceased. RCMP Serious Crimes Branch has taken carriage of the homicide investigation.  

At this time, it is believed that this was an isolated incident. There will be a heavy police presence on the Nation. Please avoid the immediate area and refrain from posting the actions of police on social media. This is for police and public safety.  

We understand how situations such as this can make a community feel uneasy, but rest assured, your Alberta RCMP is working tirelessly to keep everyone safe. We ask that the public remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or tips to the Valleyview RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
