Since the March West in 1874, the RCMP has built a strong foundation of trust, respect and compassion in the Alberta communities we serve. As Alberta’s provincial police service, the RCMP provides assistance to more than 1.5 million Albertans at the federal, provincial and municipal level. Our nearly 4,200 employees work out of 113 detachments throughout the province’s four policing districts. From the Rocky Mountains, to the prairies, to the oilpatch, Alberta RCMP employees stand at the ready, committed to providing exemplary service through our partnerships and innovative policing techniques.
The RCMP's federal mandate
The scope of the RCMP’s federal policing mandate includes: combating terrorism, organized crime, and specific crimes related to the illicit drug trade; economic crimes such as counterfeiting and credit card fraud; and offences that threaten the integrity of Canada’s national borders. The RCMP protects VIPs, including the Prime Minister and foreign dignitaries, and provides the law enforcement community with a full range of computer-based security services. There are approximately 300 regular members working to fulfill the RCMP’s federal mandate in Alberta.
Serving Alberta's communities
Public trust is the RCMP's most precious commodity. The foundation of this trust is built upon the dedicated and professional police service Albertans see in their communities every day. Along with ensuring the safety and security of Albertans, RCMP employees are often very active community members in the areas they serve.
Our members devote countless hours of volunteer time to provide a red serge presence at community events throughout Alberta. These public appearances are a genuine expression of their pride in the RCMP and of their gratitude to the citizens who support them in their work. Red serge events also provide our members with an opportunity to experience firsthand the public's overwhelming support for the RCMP. Participation in these events can be a powerful thing that serves to instill personal pride and boost esprit de corps – which is the glue that binds the RCMP organization together here in Alberta and across Canada.
