RCMP Major Crimes Unit charge male for Calling Lake murder

On Aug. 17, 2025, at 11:10 p.m., Athabasca RCMP responded to a home invasion in Calling Lake, where armed and masked suspects broke into a residence. During the home invasion, 40-year-old Edward Young, was shot and killed.

RCMP Major Crimes was called in to assist and took carriage of the investigation. As a result of the investigation, on the evening of Aug. 22, 2025, a male suspect was located and arrested by RCMP at a residence in Calling Lake.  

A 35-year-old individual, a resident of Calling Lake, has been charged with the following:

• Second-degree murder;
• Break and enter;
• Multiple firearm offences;
• Wanted on a Canada wide warrant.

After a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, the individual has been remanded into custody and will be appearing in Alberta Court of Justice in Athabasca, Alta., on Sept. 2, 2025.
