This Thanksgiving long weekend, the Alberta RCMP will be carrying out enforcement initiatives targeting impaired driving due to drugs, alcohol, distracted driving, and more. These enforcement initiatives are a part of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police’s #OperationImpact2025 – an annual public awareness campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world.
#OperationImpact2025’s theme is “Safety is in MY hands.” Help keep safety in your hands by following the below tips:
- Don’t drive impaired: Driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol impairs your judgment and reaction time. Impaired driving is criminal and dangerous.
- Don’t drive fatigued: Getting behind the wheel when tired limits your ability to pay attention to the road and slows your reaction times.
- Don’t drive distracted: Texting, calling, or handling devices while driving can result in motor vehicle collisions. Preset your handsfree device, GPS, radio, or music and do not adjust unless your vehicle is pulled over and safely stopped.
- Buckle up: Ensure all vehicle occupants are properly restrained using seat belts or child car seats.
- Drive responsibly: Don’t drive aggressively or take unnecessary risks. Drive the speed limit and follow the rules of the road.
“Over the past few months, we have seen multiple collisions resulting in fatalities,” says Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic. “We are thankful to all road users doing their part to make responsible and safe driving choices this holiday long weekend.”
If you witness any dangerous or impaired driving this holiday weekend, please call 911. For more traffic safety information, follow us on Facebook @RCMPinAlberta and Twitter @RCMPAlberta.
