Strathcona County, Alta. – Strathcona County RCMP remind motorists to keep safety in mind with winter weather approaching. Please take extra precautions when traveling, or consider avoiding travel when conditions include icy roads and blowing snow.

Whether you’re driving or just preparing for the winter season, please consider these road safety tips.

Tips for driving:

  • Remove all snow from your vehicle before each trip to improve visibility;
  • Allow yourself extra travel time in poor weather;
  • Ensure your headlights are working and always on;
  • Increase your following and breaking distance on icy roads;
  • Travel with a fully charged cell phone for emergency situations; and
  • Slow down and drive to conditions.

Keep an emergency road kit in your vehicle, with the following supplies:

  • Thermal blanket or sleeping bag;
  • Extra clothing and footwear;
  • Candle and waterproof matches;
  • First aid kit;
  • Flashlight with extra batteries;
  • Booster cables;
  • ice scraper and snow brush;
  • sand, road salt or kitty litter; and
  • shovel.

Strathcona County RCMP recommends checking road reports at 511.alberta.ca before travelling on Alberta highways as conditions can change quickly.
