Leduc, Alta. – Over the last few months, the Leduc RCMP as well as the City of Leduc have listened to public concerns with regards to social disorder and safety in the parks and open spaces within the city of Leduc.  Project Street Light was developed as a response to community concerns and to build inter agency collaboration when addressing social disorder. This project focused on 3 core principals:

  • Street Safety and Enforcement- Targeting criminal activity, open-air drug use, and behaviors that compromise public order.
  • Wrap-Around Services - Partnering with local agencies to connect vulnerable individuals to supports such as housing, addictions, and mental health services.
  • Community Engagement - Promoting visibility, proactive problem-solving, and direct engagement with residents and businesses to foster a safer, more livable community.

On Oct. 10, 2025, Project Street Light went operational. This coordinated operation involved members from the Leduc RCMPs’ Stryke Team, General Investigations Section, Police and Crisis Team, Traffic enforcement and management team. Additionally, these officers were joined by City of Leduc Community Peace Officers, and Community Outreach Partners with the City of Leduc Navigators. In total 30 team members participated in the operation.

Through a blend of proactive policing and compassionate intervention, the project produced the following results:

  • 5 arrests were made and 6 warrants executed
  • Numerous tickets and warnings were issued
  • 6 life-safety supply packages provided
  • 7 individuals accepted follow-up support services
  • 21 positive tickets issued recognizing good behavior in the community
  • 304KM patrolled by the RCMP bike unit and Leduc Enforcement Services
  • 3 encampments dismantled

“Police need to be responsive to community residents’ concerns of safety in Leduc’s public open areas.” Says Inspector Kiel Samotej Detachment Commander Leduc RCMP, “The goal of Project Street Light is to address community concerns while working alongside partner agencies to connect vulnerable individuals with supports such as housing, addictions, and mental health services.”
