Fort Sask. Alta. – During the month of November, community members may have noticed purple elephants located inside the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP Detachment, Fort Saskatchewan City Hall and Harbor Pool that November is Family Violence Prevention Month.   Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: the campaign encourages conversation, raises awareness, and connects community members with vital support and resources. “Purple elephant" has been used as a euphemism to help people engage in open conversations about difficult subjects. This November, Ellie is located at the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP Detachment.

This year, the campaign has expanded to include Morinville, Sturgeon County and Strathcona County, with unique elephant displays in Sherwood Park and Morinville.

While concerns and awareness surrounding this important topic are focused on year-round, RCMP in Fort Saskatchewan want to bring extra attention to the community about this issue, and remind those who may be in need of support of the assistance available to them.

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP has a team dedicated to investigating reports of domestic violence. The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP Domestic Violence Unit reviews all domestics reported to the detachment, investigate all high-risk and complex domestic violence matters, monitor prolific offenders, and provide support and safety planning to victims and families. The Fort Saskatchewan Domestic Violence Unit works in partnership with federal and provincial partners, as well as local agencies to provide intervention, promote awareness and assist in the prevention of family violence.

RCMP recognize that statistics and calls to police do not always represent the whole picture, and that incidents of family violence may go unreported. Police remind the community that supports and resources are available, and encourage residents to call police if they or someone they know are experiencing violence in the home or within their relationships. Family Violence happens in many forms and across all demographics. It can affect anyone and leaves a lasting impact on individuals, families, and communities.

Help is available and you are not alone. Together, we can break the silence and build safer, stronger communities.
