Wood Buffalo RCMP on scene of fatal multi-vehicle collision

Fort McMurray, Alta. – On Jan. 7, 2026, around 8:45 p.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP were called to a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 63 at Airport Road. RCMP and EMS arrived on scene with EMS pronouncing the driver of one of the vehicles, a 27-year-old resident of Fort McMurray, deceased on scene. All other people involved have varying degrees of injuries and are expected to survive. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
Wood Buffalo RCMP would like to advise the public that Highway 63 Northbound will be closed until further notice at Airport Road and is unlikely to reopen before late in the day of Jan. 8, 2026. Traffic is being diverted and is expected to be slow-going during this time. Those traveling in the area are asked to proceed with caution and to listen to the instructions of those conducting traffic control in the area.
An update is anticipated once the highway reopens or should more information become available.
