A confrontation occurred resulting in an officer discharging their service pistol. The suspect sustained injuries and was transported via air ambulance to hospital. The stabbing victim was transported via ground ambulance to hospital. Both are expected to survive. No police officers were injured.
Schools within proximity to this incident were put into hold and secure for precautionary reasons. There were no direct threat or safety concerns for schools or public. Police believe this to be an isolated incident.
Due to the injuries sustained to the suspect, the Chief Executive Officer of the Police Review Commission (PRC) has directed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team to investigate the event as a Level 1 matter, which the Police Act defines as a case involving serious injury, death, or serious or sensitive allegations relating to the actions of an officer. All media inquiries about this incident should now be directed to the PRC at PRCmedia@gov.ab.ca or 780-644-0306.
Independent of ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP’s internal review process has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident.
