Driver Swerves to Avoid Animals, Crashes Near Bridal Falls
Officers responded to a late evening single-vehicle collision on Highway 1 eastbound near Popkum. A sedan had left the roadway, striking a lamp standard, travelling through a ditch and chain-link fence before coming to rest near Bridal Falls Road. Three occupants were assessed by emergency responders and fortunately did not require further medical treatment. This was especially fortunate given the extensive damage sustained by the vehicle, which was later towed from the scene. Investigators determined the driver had attempted to avoid an animal on the highway before losing control. Interestingly, three bear cubs were observed in the area as first responders left the scene.
Reminder: Wildlife can appear suddenly on roadways, particularly during dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours. Drivers are reminded to stay alert and reduce speed in wildlife-prone areas.
Backcountry dirt bike injuries highlight need for preparedness
Agassiz RCMP responded to two separate dirt bike incidents during the reporting period.
In the first incident, a rider suffered a dislocated shoulder near the 60-kilometre mark of the Harrison East Forest Service Road. Due to the remote location, Kent Search and Rescue assisted in transporting the injured rider to waiting paramedics.
In a second incident near the 15-kilometre mark of the Garnet Creek Forest Service Road, a dirt bike rider sustained injuries after a crash and was transported to hospital for treatment.
Neither incident is believed to involve alcohol or drugs, and both riders suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Safety Reminder: Remote forest service roads can be challenging for emergency responders to access. Riders are encouraged to wear proper protective equipment, avoid riding alone, ensure someone knows their route, and carry communication devices when travelling in backcountry areas.
ATV crash under investigation
Agassiz RCMP attended the 5-kilometre mark of the Chehalis Forest Service Road following a report of an ATV collision. A lone male rider was located unconscious by passing motorists, with the ATV on top of him. The man was unable to provide any information to the police, and it was determined he had been travelling alone. He was transported to hospital for medical treatment of his injuries. Open liquor containers were observed in the area, and an impaired driving investigation remains ongoing.
Early morning traffic stop results in driving prohibition
During early morning patrols on Lougheed Highway, an officer observed a vehicle travelling through several side roads in Agassiz in a manner that suggested the driver may be impaired, lost, or perhaps both. After conducting a traffic stop, the officer observed signs of impairment exhibited by the driver. The driver provided a roadside breath sample that resulted in a “Warn” reading on an Approved Screening Device. The driver was issued a 3-day driving prohibition, and the vehicle was impounded.
Remember, even if your last drink was several hours earlier, alcohol can remain in your system and affect your ability to drive. Drivers can still face roadside prohibitions, vehicle impoundments, and a mark on their driving record if they operate a vehicle after consuming alcohol.
Property crimes
Agassiz RCMP continue to respond to a variety of property-related offences throughout the area, including:
- A vehicle that had been left in a ditch on Yale Road overnight was reported stolen before it could be recovered by a tow company.
- An attempted theft of a truck from a residential garage on Parkwood Drive resulted in damage to the garage door and vehicle ignition.
- A theft from a vehicle on Morrow Road resulted in damage to the vehicle and property stolen from inside.
- Police are also investigating a break and enter on Chaplin Road where a significant amount of farm equipment was stolen from a rural property.
Lock vehicles, remove valuables from sight, secure garages and outbuildings, and consider additional security measures such as lighting, cameras, or alarm systems. Rural properties can be particularly attractive targets for thieves due to their isolated locations.
