A man who was 20 years old at the time of a fatal crash in northern BC is now facing criminal charges for the collision that killed an Alberta man and injured another.

On June 12, 2024, just after 6:00 a.m., BC Highway Patrol was called to a collision on the Alaska Highway (Highway #97 North) near Sikanni River Bridge. A Ford F350 pickup had collided with a Chevrolet Silverado pickup, leading to minor injuries for a 24-year-old Alberta man who was a passenger in the Silverado, and the death of the 32-year-old Alberta man who was driving.

“These are very difficult times for the family and friends of the victim,” says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “It’s important in these tragic cases that we take the time to do a thorough investigation so that Crown Counsel can consider all the evidence.”

On February 12, 2026, the BC Prosecution Service laid three charges against 22-year-old Bryan Gass of Wonowon, BC:

  1. Dangerous operation (of a motor vehicle) causing death, section 320.13(3) of the Criminal Code;
  2. Impaired operation causing death, section 320.14(3) of the Criminal Code;
  3. Refusal to provide a sample where death occurs, section 320.15(3) of the Criminal Code.

Out of respect for the court process, BC Highway Patrol will not be providing additional details about the collision until the process is complete.

Gass is scheduled to appear in court in Fort St John on March 30, 2026.
