On February 25, 2026, the Lower Mainland Commercial Vehicle Enforcement group set up an inspection in Burnaby to educate commercial truck drivers and enforce the rules of the road.
The planned enforcement took place on Marine Way, near Roseberry Avenue in South Burnaby.
The results of the operation were as follows:
- 67 inspections.
- 35 commercial vehicles placed out of service.
- 172 violations identified.
- 117 violation tickets issued.
Here are some issues our inspectors noted:
- A fuel cap was missing and covered with a sandwich bag, which was secured with a charging cable.
- A fuel tank was secured to the vehicle by two non-rated straps; one was damaged and the other was pressing against a broken piece of the fuel tank housing that was cutting into the strap. The original housing that secured the fuel tank to the truck had completely broken off.
- A truck had a defective steering mechanism.
- A trailer’s emergency brake was inoperative.
- A trailer’s axles or wheel housings were bent due to the trailer being repeatedly overloaded.
Unbelievably, all these violations, and more, were noted on one dump truck pulling a flat deck trailer with a bobcat. The driver was issued 6 violation tickets totalling $1,215 in fines. The truck and trailer licence plates were seized, and both vehicles were towed and ordered to immediately be taken to a designated inspection facility.
“There are many professional drivers and companies that follow road safety laws. This is clearly not one of them,” said Cst. Kevin Connolly, Burnaby RCMP’s Designated Commercial Vehicle Inspector. “This is not an accurate representation of every commercial vehicle on our roadways, it is, however, a good example of why we do these inspections.”
In total, 10 agencies participated on this date, including:
- Vancouver Police Department CVU
- Delta Police Department CVU
- New Westminster Police Department CVU
- Coquitlam RCMP
- Integrated Road Safety Unit
- City of Coquitlam Bylaw CVU
- Township of Langley Bylaw CVU
