With the holiday shopping season just around the corner, the Burnaby RCMP is reminding the community to be vigilant against “porch piracy”, the theft of packages delivered to residential doorsteps.

“While we have not yet seen an increase in reported porch piracy, we are approaching that time of year,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with the Burnaby RCMP. “These thieves often strike in broad daylight, looking for loot and plundering unattended packages in residential neighbourhoods.”

Seeking public assistance

Burnaby RCMP is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect involved in a recent package theft in South Burnaby on September 28, 2026.

“We’re hoping that the distinct vehicle, coupled with the suspect’s clothing, will help someone identify this individual,” Cpl. Kalanj added. “Anyone that falls victim to porch piracy is reminded to always report it to police.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999 and quote file 2026-34807.

Tips to prevent package theft

  • Plan for deliveries: Use tracking notifications to know exactly when a package arrives.
  • Retrieve packages promptly: Bring items inside as soon as they are delivered.
  • Request secure delivery: Ask couriers to require a signature upon a parcel’s delivery or have parcels delivered to an alternate secure pick-up location.
  • Utilize security cameras: Doorbell cameras and security systems can act as a deterrent and provide valuable evidence if a theft occurs.
