Campbell River RCMP warn of ICBC text scam

In recent days, multiple community members have reported to the Campbell River RCMP that they have received a text from ICBC that tells them that they have unpaid tickets. The texts advise that if the fines remain unpaid that service will be discontinued or licenses suspended. 

These texts are completely fraudulent and appear to have originated from an international number that is not affiliated with ICBC. 

The fraudulent text reads:

ICBC Traffic Ticket Notice. 

Our records show that you have an unresolved traffic fine linked to your driving account. If this remains unpaid after September 3rd, 2025, the following service restrictions may apply: 

1. Record status will remain flagged in the ICBC Violation database; 
2. Renewal of your vehicle registration may be denied starting September 3rd; 
3. Driver's licence renewal may be temporarily restricted; 
4. Additional administrative fees may apply; 5. Your account may be subject to further review. Action Link https://icbc.com-cabnb.my/. 

Please complete the payment before September 3 to avoid service disruption. (Reply Y and re-open this message to click the link to your browser.)

"These kinds of scams have become more common and many people end up being duped, " advised Cst Maury Tyre. "If in doubt about communications received from a corporate entity, especially by text or email, don't interact with them or give any personal information. The simplest way to determine if it's a scam is to contact the company yourself, without using the link the scammer has provided in the email or text. Legitimate contact numbers are available on the back of you're credit cards and on official company websites."
