Chilliwack RCMP officers were kept busy this past week responding to a variety of calls across the community, with a continued focus on impaired driving, property crime, and public safety in popular outdoor areas.
Impaired driving
Officers dealt with several incidents of impaired driving, taking proactive steps to keep our roads safe. Including a driver who went off the road into a ditch on Chilliwack River Road and showed clear signs of impairment. This individual was also found to be prohibited from driving. In another case on Cheam Avenue, a driver refused to provide a breath sample, tried to walk away from police, and resisted arrest—resulting in damage to a police vehicle and the need for multiple officers to attend and assist with the safe arrest of the driver. In a separate incident on Tyson Road, a driver failed a roadside screening after running a red light and then ran from police. They were quickly located and arrested.
Officers also conducted a check stop on Columbia Valley Highway during one evening, screening about 100 vehicles travelling through the area. One driver attempted to avoid police and was issued an immediate roadside prohibition and a ticket for driving without insurance.
Mischief related incidents
Officers also dealt with several mischief related calls. This included a woman observed by officers throwing a rock into a residence on Yale Road, damaging windows at the home after yelling at the occupants to be let inside. She was arrested and later released on conditions to stay away from the area. Another woman was reported to be throwing rotten tomatoes at passing cars on Airport Road. The woman, well known to police, was arrested and officers quickly learned she also had an outstanding arrest warrant, resulting in her being held for court.
Property crime incidents
Officers continue to actively investigate reports of property crime. A dirt bike valued at approximately $8,000 was stolen from a truck on Robson Street, and another report involved a vehicle break-in on Kestrel Drive where electronics, cash, and bank cards were taken and later used by unknown suspects. In addition, officers are investigating a garage break-and-enter on Thomas Road where multiple suspects were caught on camera stealing thousands of dollars worth of items.
Chilliwack RCMP remind residents to secure their vehicles and property, report suspicious behaviour, and make safe choices—especially when it comes to alcohol and driving.
Seasonal Policing Activities
The warmer weather this past weekend brought more visitors to the Cultus lake area, keeping our seasonal policing team busy. Officers addressed illegal parking of numerous vehicles at Maple Bay and enforced boating safety at Main Beach, including issuing a ticket to a jet ski operator speeding in a swimming only zone. Traffic enforcement also continued, with several tickets issued for speeding. Officers also responded to several disturbances involving intoxication which resulted in arrests, helping maintain a safe atmosphere for families and visitors.
