Stolen vehicles
Police received several reports of stolen or targeted vehicles. A UTV was stolen from Blatchford Road after being left in an unlocked shed with the keys inside. A large van was stolen overnight from Coote Street, and on Yale Road, a vehicle theft was attempted but unsuccessful, however, a significant quantity of mechanical parts was stolen from inside the vehicle.
Recovered stolen vehicle
An officer queried a vehicle in the parking lot on Promontory Road. The vehicle was determined to be stolen from Surrey several months ago. A man, well known to police, was observed in the driver’s seat and he was arrested. He will be appearing in court at a later date.
Break and enters
Officers investigated multiple break and enters throughout the week. A vacant apartment on MacIntosh Street was entered, resulting in the theft of tools and other personal items. On Yale Road, a more serious incident involved a break and enter where a significant amount of cash and numerous cell phones were stolen in the early morning hours, with access believed to have been gained through an unsecured door. At a construction site on Main Street, live surveillance alerted police to a suspect removing copper wire from an insecure fenced area and placing it in a nearby dumpster. Police were able to recover one roll of wire, though additional spools remain outstanding.
Remember to lock your vehicles, remove keys, and never leave them running unattended. Secure your sheds, homes, and outside areas, and keep valuables out of sight in vehicles.
Impaired driving
On Chilliwack Central Road, a vehicle reportedly drove into a residence, causing a fire that was later contained. All occupants were able to exit safely without injury. The driver was located and arrested, and impairment has not been ruled out as a contributing factor, the investigation remains ongoing.
On Spadina Avenue, officers were flagged down after a motorcyclist struck a street sign. The rider admitted to consuming alcohol, which was confirmed through roadside testing. An Immediate Roadside Prohibition was issued, and the rider was transported to hospital for treatment.
Persons offences
A Security guard being was reportedly assaulted at a gas station on Young Road resulting in injuries and the male suspect fleeing on a bike. The security guard had been attempting to move a large group of people away from the area when the assault occurred.
Police also responded to a fight on First Avenue involving two groups, where a man wearing a ski mask assaulted two female victims. Officers located the group, arrested the suspect, and determined he had an outstanding warrant from Campbell River. He was also breaching other court ordered conditions and will be appearing in court.
At Cultus Lake, multiple individuals were reportedly bear sprayed. The investigation led to the identification and arrest of a male youth in connection with the incident. The youth will be appearing in court at a later date.
In another instance, a man allegedly threatened employees at a store on Yale Road before leaving with stolen merchandise. Officers located a suspect matching the man’s description at a nearby park. The man was arrested and is expected to appear in court at a later date.
Seasonal policing activities
With warm weather drawing large crowds to local recreational areas, the seasonal policing team was active throughout the weekend at Cultus Lake.
Officers dealt with numerous illegally parked vehicles, many of which were towed. On the water, approximately 12 vessels were checked, with four found to be lacking required safety equipment and sent back to shore. In addition, nine paddleboarders were sent back to shore for not having life jackets and were advised they could return to the water once properly equipped.
A serious incident occurred at Main Beach, where a man fell into the water and was unable to swim. Bystanders rendered aid to the man who regained consciousness before being transported to the hospital for medical treatment.
While first responders were managing this incident at Main Beach, two women became agitated when asked to clear the area. They entered the water and began splashing emergency personnel, resulting in their arrest. Both were found to be intoxicated, issued tickets under the Liquor Control Act, and held in custody until sober.
Police are reminding visitors to come prepared with proper water safety equipment and to stay aware of their surroundings in recreational areas. They also want to stress the importance of using alcohol responsibly, never operating a vessel while impaired, and exercising caution around water by understanding your swimming ability and local conditions.
