Property Crimes

Over the last week, Chilliwack RCMP received several reports of vehicle thefts and attempted vehicle thefts throughout Chilliwack, including incidents on Victoria Avenue, Chilliwack River Road, Trethewey Avenue, Cleveland Avenue, Canterbury Drive, Alpine Crescent, and at a hotel parking lot on Young Road. Several older-model pickup trucks were among the vehicles targeted. In one incident, a trailer and ATV were also stolen. 

Police remind vehicle owners to help reduce the risk of theft by:

• Locking all doors and windows.
• Removing keys and valuables from vehicles.
• Parking in well-lit areas whenever possible.
• Using steering wheel locks or other visible anti-theft devices.
• Installing immobilizers or vehicle tracking systems, is possible.
• Securing trailers, ATVs, and recreational vehicles with quality locks and storing them in locations that limit easy access.

On a positive note, Chilliwack RCMP saw a decrease in residential break and enters throughout the community last week. Community vigilance plays an important role and is an effective crime prevention tool. Neighbours looking out for one another and reporting suspicious behaviour can help police identify and address criminal activity before it increases. Police encourage residents to remain vigilant, secure their homes and vehicles, and report suspicious activity as soon as possible. 

Weapons seized

Officers responded after a security company requested assistance with several people loitering near Yale Road in downtown Chilliwack. Police attended, dispersed the crowd, and arrested one man who was found in possession of bear spray and a knife.

Impaired driving 

An officer was parked on Thomas Road when a driver stopped and exited his vehicle to confront the officer. The man continued to behave aggressively and was detained. The officer detected an odour of liquor on the driver who refused to comply with a roadside breath sample. The driver was held in custody until he was sober and issued an Immediate Roadside Prohibition upon his release, and his vehicle was impounded.

Proactive work

Wanted man arrested near train tracks

Officers observed a man with an outstanding arrest warrant riding a bicycle near Hocking Avenue. When officers attempted to arrest him, he fled on foot but was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit. A search incidental to arrest located suspected illicit drugs, suspected break-and-enter tools, and weapons, all contrary to his court-ordered conditions. He was held in custody for court.

Arrest warrant leads to drugs seizure and impaired driving

During a traffic stop on Coote Street, officers determined that a passenger in the vehicle was wanted on an outstanding warrant for prohibited driving. The man was arrested, and officers located suspected illicit drugs and weapons inside the vehicle, which were seized. The man was held for court. Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicele was found to be exhibiting signs of impairment. They provided roadside breath samples, which resulted in an Immediate Roadside Prohibition, and the vehicle was impounded.

Seasonal policing activities

There have been several recent reports of bike thefts in the Cultus Lake area, as well as suspicious individuals checking vehicle door handles near Lindell Beach. In response, police have increased patrols in the affected areas and remind residents and visitors to secure their property, lock vehicles, remove valuables from sight, and report suspicious activity to police.

Two bears reportedly wandered into a campground at Cultus Lake overnight, with one bear ripping into a tent. The bears are believed to be returning to the area due to unsecured refuse. Campers are reminded to properly store food, secure attractants, and follow bear-safe practices to help prevent wildlife encounters.

Officers also spent time on Cultus Lake conducting marine safety enforcement and education, ensuring compliance with boating regulations. Numerous paddleboarders were found without the required safety equipment, including life jackets. These individuals were directed to shore to obtain the necessary equipment before returning to the water. Officers will continue proactive enforcement and education to help ensure the safety of all water users throughout the summer.

Boating incident at Main Beach   
A boat entered the designated swim zone at Main Beach, cutting the rope that marked the swimming area and dislodged a buoy. The operator was identified and issued a $300 violation ticket for operating a motorized vessel within a swim zone. The operator was also issued a $288 violation ticket for failing to possess the required boating licence. Additional safety equipment deficiencies were noted, and the operator was provided with education regarding boating safety requirements.

Marine safety enforcement 

Officers observed two jet skis operating in a dangerous manner near the Jade Bay boat launch on Cultus Lake. The operators were reportedly stunting within a designated no-wake zone, creating safety concerns for other boaters and water users. Neither operator was able to produce the required registration documents. Both were directed to leave the water and complied with police instructions.

ATV collision with non life threatening injuries 

Police responded to a collision involving an ATV and an E-bicycle on the Liumchen Service Road. A youth sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment. All parties involved were wearing appropriate helmets and safety gear, which likely helped prevent more serious injuries.

Injured hiker 

Police received a report of an injured hiker on Goat Peak near Chilliwack Lake. A fellow hiker came across the injured man and his companion and contacted emergency services on their behalf. Chilliwack Search and Rescue assisted in successfully locating the injured hiker in the remote area. He was safely extracted and transported to hospital for medical treatment. Police would like to remind hikers to be prepared for changing conditions, carry appropriate emergency supplies, and ensure someone is aware of their planned route and expected return time before heading into the backcountry.
