Impaired driver reported by concerned citizen 

A concerned neighbour reported a driver they believed to be impaired after observing the individual leave their neighbourhood in a vehicle. Officers located the vehicle at a gas station on Yale Road and observed signs of impairment while speaking with the driver, who admitted to recently consuming alcohol. The driver failed roadside testing. Further investigation revealed a previous Immediate Roadside Prohibition (IRP) a few years prior, resulting in the driver being issued a 90-day IRP and having their vehicle impounded for 30 days.

Assault related to driving incident

Officers attended Mary Street to assist paramedics who were treating an injured man. Once on scene, the officers were informed that following a driving-related dispute, a man had allegedly approached the victim's vehicle, damaged it with a garden tool, and then assaulted the victim. Witnesses provided information that assisted police in identifying a possible suspect. The suspect was located and arrested a few days later in relation to the incident and held for court.

Proactive work 

Drugs and tobacco seized during traffic stop

An officer stopped a vehicle on First Avenue after observing it fail to maintain its lane. Two women were located inside the vehicle, and the driver was not displaying signs of impairment. The officer did however observe suspected drugs near the driver. The woman was arrested, and a subsequent search located additional suspected drugs and unstamped tobacco, all of which were seized. 

Theft of plants leads to arrest warrant

Police observed a man placing several fruit plants on his bicycle outside of a grocery store on Luckakuck Way before pedalling away. Officers stopped the man shortly afterward, and police checks revealed he was wanted on an outstanding warrant from Saskatchewan. He was arrested, and the plants were returned to the store. It appears his gardening plans will have to wait a little longer.

Stolen vehicle involved in collision

Police observed a vehicle leaving a liquor establishment on Yale Road and learned through police checks that it was uninsured. When officers attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle continued driving and was not followed for public safety reasons. A short time later, police were notified that the same vehicle had collided with a parked vehicle approximately one kilometre down the road. When officers arrived at the collision, they located the driver who reported to have sustained only minor injuries. It was soon learned that the vehicle had been reported stolen earlier that day. The driver received a 24-hour driving prohibition as a result of an impaired driving investigation, and is expected to appear in court in relation to the stolen vehicle.

Impaired driving 

A vehicle with inoperative headlights was stopped on Cooke Street. The driver displayed signs of impairment and failed roadside testing. Officers also learned the driver was prohibited from driving. An IRP was issued, multiple violation tickets were served under the Motor Vehicle Act, and the driver will appear in court for driving while prohibited.

Additional IRPs were issued as a result of proactive patrols on Yale Road, Yale Road West, Columbia Valley Road, Vedder Road, and Thomas Road.

Seasonal policing activities

The Seasonal Policing Team remained active in the Cultus Lake area throughout the week. Officers conducted several boat patrols and found multiple paddleboard users without the required safety equipment.  Those individuals were directed back to shore to obtain the necessary equipment before returning to the water.

Educational patrols continue to be a priority as officers work to ensure recreational users remain safe on local waterways. Foot patrols along local beaches also allowed officers to provide safety information and educational materials to paddleboarders and other water users.

Jet ski endangers paddle boarders

Officers observed a jet ski operating in a dangerous manner near Entrance Bay within a designated no-wake swimming zone. The operator was seen travelling at high speed near two paddleboarders, creating a wake that nearly caused them to fall into the water and narrowly avoiding a collision. The operator received a $430 violation ticket for careless operation of the jet ski.

Impaired driver located at boat launch

While conducting patrols near Jade Bay, an officer spoke with a person sitting in their vehicle waiting to launch a boat. Signs of impairment were observed by the officer, and the driver refused to comply with roadside testing. The refusal resulted in an IRP, vehicle impoundment, and the individual being held in custody until sober and able to care for themselves.

Excessive speeding

While patrolling Chilliwack Lake Road, an officer recorded a vehicle travelling 139 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. The driver received an excessive speeding violation ticket, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Overdue dirt biker returns unharmed

Police received a report of an overdue dirt bike rider who had not returned to their campsite as expected. While officers were responding, the rider returned and advised they had fallen approximately 40 feet down an embankment before walking for two hours back to camp. The rider reported no injuries and was assessed by paramedics as a precaution.

Community safety reminder

As summer activity continues across Chilliwack and the surrounding recreational areas, the Chilliwack RCMP reminds residents and visitors to make safety a priority both on the water and in the back country. The public is encouraged to report impaired drivers, dangerous boating activity, and other public safety concerns.

Officers will continue their proactive enforcement and education efforts in the Cultus Lake area. Boaters, paddleboarders, and other water users are reminded to carry the required safety equipment, wear properly fitted life jackets or personal flotation devices, and familiarize themselves with local regulations before heading onto the water. 

Small precautions can prevent serious injuries and save lives.
