Seasonal policing team weekend snapshot: September 4 to 7

The Labour Day long weekend marked the conclusion of the seasonal policing initiative in the Cultus Lake area. Overall, the weekend was uneventful, with officers continuing enforcement and safety patrols on the water while responding to only a small number of incidents. As the saying goes, no news is good news.

Overdue dirt bikers located safe

Officers, working alongside Chilliwack Search and Rescue, responded to a report of three overdue dirt bikers on the Slesse-Borden Forest Service Road. Family members became concerned when the riders failed to return as planned and their vehicle was found unattended at the trailhead. Due to the remote location, cell phone contact was not possible. After an extensive search, Search and Rescue located the riders safe at a remote cabin, where they had chosen to remain overnight until daylight. A safety plan was put in place to assist with their return the following day.

Marine enforcement and safety checks

Throughout the weekend, officers and Transport Canada conducted proactive vessel inspections and compliance checks on Cultus Lake. A jet ski operator received a $288 violation ticket for operating at excessive speeds within 30 metres of shore. In a separate incident, a jet ski owner was issued a $288 violation ticket for allowing an unlicensed individual to operate their personal watercraft after officers observed unsafe operation near the Jade Bay boat launch, creating hazardous conditions for boaters using the launch.

Officers also directed 15 paddleboarders to shore after they were found to be without the required safety equipment.

While summer is coming to an end, the importance of being prepared does not. Visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, carry appropriate safety equipment, and be prepared for changing conditions regardless of the season. Public safety is a shared responsibility, and safe recreation starts with each of us.
