Bear spray incident involving youth
Police responded to Central Park on Victoria Avenue after security personnel reported a large group of youths causing disturbances and consuming alcohol. Upon arrival, one youth was located suffering from the effects of bear spray. The youth was alleged to have been pointing bear spray at security staff and members of the public. The intoxicated youth then became involved in an altercation with an unknown adult male and was subsequently sprayed with his own bear spray. The youth was arrested and held for investigation after he was treated for the effects of bear spray. Police are reminding the public that bear spray is designed for protection against wildlife and is not a lawful means of self-defence against other individuals. Possessing or carrying bear spray for the purpose of self-defence against a person, or using it on another person, could result in criminal charges.
Three arrested following stolen vehicle investigation
Chilliwack RCMP received information that a stolen vehicle from another jurisdiction was travelling toward Chilliwack on Highway 1. Officers located the vehicle, along with an associated vehicle, travelling eastbound at high rates of speed. The stolen vehicle was safely disabled near Bridal Falls Road and both vehicles were stopped. Three individuals were arrested. Officers seized an imitation firearm and suspected illicit substances, and one of the occupants was found to be breaching court-ordered conditions from another province. All three individuals were arrested and the vehicles were seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
Break and enter leads to theft of two vehicles
A homeowner on Bernard Avenue returned after a short absence to discover their residence had been broken into and damaged. Two vehicles were also stolen from the property. Investigators believe entry was gained through an unlocked door, and the vehicle keys were taken from inside the residence. One vehicles was recovered in Chilliwack later that day, while the second was located in another jurisdiction the following day. The investigation remains ongoing. Residents are reminded to secure their homes and vehicles by locking doors and safeguarding keys.
Collision involving train and vehicle highlights importance of rail safety
Officers responded to a collision involving a train and a vehicle at the Lickman Road railway crossing. The driver reported no injuries, and the vehicle sustained damage making it inoperable. The train conductor reported the vehicle failed to stop before entering the crossing. The driver confirmed he had become confused and did not stop at the railway intersection. A violation ticket was issued to the driver for failing to stop at a railway crossing, and the vehicle was towed from the scene. Motorists are reminded to always stop, look, and listen at railway crossings and obey all posted signs and signals. Collisions involving trains often end in tragedy, fortunately this collision did not.
E-Bike rider injured in collision
An e-bike rider was transported to hospital with minor injuries following a collision with a vehicle on Coote Street during the evening hours. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. The investigation determined the cyclist had been travelling on the wrong side of the roadway prior to the collision. Officers also noted signs of alcohol consumption, and the rider was wearing dark clothing and operating the e-bike without lights. This incident serves as a reminder for cyclists to obey traffic laws and ensure they are visible to other road users.
Sleeping driver issued 24-hour suspension
Officers responded to a report of a woman asleep behind the wheel of a vehicle on Margaret Avenue. Upon speaking with the driver, officers observed signs consistent with drug impairment. The woman was issued a 24-hour driving suspension and her vehicle was impounded.
Fisher rescued from Vedder River
A fisher required assistance after slipping while attempting to cross the Vedder River near Chilliwack Lake Road. The individual was swept approximately 75 metres downstream before finding refuge on a rock. Unable to safely return to shore, the fisher was able to call the police for help. Chilliwack RCMP requested assistance from Chilliwack Search and Rescue, who successfully brought the individual to safety without injury. With rivers remaining cold and unpredictable, residents are encouraged to use caution when spending time near or in local waterways.
