Stolen vehicle recovered in Agassiz
A homeowner reported their vehicle had been stolen from a property on Yale Road sometime overnight. All keys were accounted for, and theft prevention devices were in place at the time of the theft. The vehicle was located several hours later in Agassiz after being reported as suspicious at a residence. The occupants of the residence were not connected to the theft. Damage was observed on the vehicle, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Stolen vehicle recovered and man arrested
Police received a report of a vehicle stolen from a residence on Princess Avenue sometime overnight. Video surveillance captured a man in the area around the time the vehicle left the property. Approximately one hour later, the vehicle was located on Charles Street. Officers located a man nearby who matched the description captured on video and arrested him. The suspect, who was from another jurisdiction and known to police, was held in custody for a court appearance. The investigation remains ongoing with assistance from Forensic Identification Services.
Robbery at restaurant under investigation
Officers responded to a report of a robbery at a restaurant on Hocking Avenue where several individuals were exposed to bear spray after a suspect allegedly took merchandise from inside before leaving the area. No physical injuries were reported beyond the effects of the bear spray exposure. The investigation is ongoing to identify the male suspect.
Single vehicle collision on Vedder Road results in injuries
Police responded to a single vehicle collision on Vedder Road. The vehicle was reportedly travelling southbound at a high rate of speed when it struck a curb, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle crossed multiple lanes of traffic, and came to rest on its side in nearby hedges, narrowly missing a motorcycle. A female passenger was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the male driver sustained minor injuries. Violation tickets were issued for driving without due care and attention, and the vehicle was impounded. Impairment is not believed to have been a factor.
Victim cooperation limits assault investigations
In two separate assault investigations this week, limited information provided by the victims affected officers' ability to identify suspects and advance the investigations.
In one incident, a man using a wheelchair was assaulted outside a restaurant on Yale Road and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Despite receiving medical treatment, the victim declined to provide details about the assault, leaving investigators with no viable leads to identify the suspect.
In a second incident, police received a report of an alleged assault involving a machete at Salish Park. Officers located a man with injuries requiring medical treatment. He provided inconsistent accounts of what had occurred. Investigators were unable to locate evidence to advance the investigation into the reported assault, and no suspect or weapon was located.
In both cases, police believe the suspects may have been known to the victims, and that this may have contributed to their reluctance to cooperate with the investigations.
Fisher needing assistance in Vedder River
Chilliwack RCMP received a report of a fisherman stranded in the Vedder River with the water reaching his chest. The Fire Department responded and initiated a rescue after two additional individuals entered the river in an attempt to assist him, resulting in three people being in the water. A large crowd had also gathered to watch the rescue efforts. The fisherman was safely rescued, reported no injuries, and appeared in good health.
Possible jumper on Yale Road overpass
Police responded to a report of a man who appeared to be attempting to jump from the Yale Road overpass near Hocking Avenue, while another individual was observed holding onto him and preventing him from going over the edge. Upon arrival, officers located the man on the sidewalk consuming alcohol. He was highly intoxicated, unable to provide any information about what had occurred, and unable to safely care for himself. As a result, he was taken into police custody for his own safety and well-being. The bystander who reportedly intervened had left prior to police arrival and could not be identified or provide further information about the incident. Once sober, the man had no recollection of the events and was found to be in good spirits. It appears the incident may have been the result of a misunderstanding involving a highly intoxicated individual.
