CompStat - Addressing Property Crime - Coquitlam RCMP
Every month, Coquitlam RCMP investigators and staff come together for CompStat, a forum used to review and analyze local crime data and discuss tactics to address the people, places and issues that are compromising the safety of the neighbourhoods and citizens we serve.
CompStat is the cornerstone of our Crime Reduction Strategy. It combines data analysis, strategic problem solving and rigorous accountability to help reduce crime in our jurisdiction. Property Crime Maps are one of the tools reviewed during the CompStat forum, the maps are analyzed and discussed by investigators and then strategies are implemented to address areas of concern.
The Property Crime Maps provide a visual compilation of property crimes reported during the two weeks noted on the map. The Maps are available for the public to view on our website; this allows members of the public to review and take proactive steps to deter crime in their neighbourhoods.

The information included on the Property Crime Map is reliant on reports of crime and suspicious activities. We encourage the public to report crimes by calling the Coquitlam RCMP non-emergency line at 604-945-1550. Additionally, some crimes can be reported through the RCMP Online Crime Reporting tool.
Frequently asked questions
What is CompStat?
The CompStat process is the cornerstone of Coquitlam RCMP's successful Crime Reduction Strategy (CRS).
Key to the process is a bi-weekly meeting where crime statistics, project updates and intelligence from the preceding two weeks are reviewed by a group of analysts and investigators. The focus of CompStat is to quickly identify crime trends and put concrete plans in place to address them.
At the end of each CompStat meeting, the team identifies areas recommended for patrols, which become the focus of increased patrols and street checks by members and volunteers over the subsequent two-week period.
What is the Crime Reduction Strategy?
The CRS is an approach to policing and public safety that keeps the entire Coquitlam RCMP team focused on the people ("prolific" and "priority" offenders), places and issues ("root causes") that are having the most significant negative impact on public safety in our jurisdiction.
This involves gathering intelligence, working with our partners in the community and conducting enforcement projects intended to identify and resolve the biggest public safety issues in our jurisdiction.
That's the simple answer; you can find out more about the CRS here.
What is a prolific offender?
Prolific offenders are the relatively small number of people that are involved in a disproportionate amount of crime and disorder. More on prolific offenders.
What can I do to make my neighbourhood safer?
We encourage residents and businesses to follow these three simple steps to help make their community safer:
- Get connected to your neighbourhood. When you know the people, vehicles & activities that are normal in your area it's easier to spot suspicious or criminal activity if it happens.
- Pay attention to your environment. Whether you're at home, at work, at school or anywhere in between, it pays to stay alert. Put away your cell phone, unplug your headphones & tune in to what's going on around you.
- If you see something, say something. If you see criminal or suspicious activity, call us at 604-945-1550 for non-emergencies and 9-1-1 in an emergency. We may not send an officer to investigate immediately but without your information we have no way of knowing what is going on in your area. More information on reporting crime.
Crime Prevention Tips
Home security:
- Lock your doors and windows.
- Check on your storage lockers and empty your mailbox regularly.
- Wait for the gate and don’t hold building doors open for strangers.
Auto security:
- Protect your garage door opener as well as your insurance and registration documents. Take them with you when parked.
- Park so it is difficult to gain access under your car. When possible park against a wall or closer to lower vehicles.
- Park in well-lit/well-populated areas where “natural surveillance” can serve as a deterrent.
- Don’t leave any bags or valuables unattended in your vehicle. Not even for a moment. Not even locked in your trunk or glove box. Thieves know to check the trunk and glove box if they don’t see anything out in the open.
Business security:
- Install a security system and learn how to use it.
- Train employees to recognize suspicious and criminal activity, how to respond safely and report to police.
- Don’t let your windows get covered up with ads and posters. The inside of your business should be visible from the street.
- Invest in quality exterior doors and locks. Exterior doors should be solid-core and secured by at least one deadbolt with a minimum 1” throw (throw is the part that extends into the door frame when locked).
