One snowmobiler has died after an avalanche was triggered in the Kootenay Pass.

On February 28, 2026 at approximately 12:10 p.m. MST, Creston RCMP was advised of an SOS activation from a Garmin device mapping to the area of Kootenay Pass. Shortly after, police received information that an avalanche had occurred involving two snowmobilers, one of whom was non-responsive. The avalanche was determined to be a size 2.5 in transmission line behind Camel’s Hump.

Other snowmobilers in the area provided assistance to the two snowmobilers involved while emergency personnel from the Creston RCMP, Search and Rescue, and BC Emergency Health Services responded. Both men were extracted by the other snowmobilers, but sadly a 23-year-old man died at scene.

Creston RCMP wishes to express our condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased man. No further information will be provided at this time.
