Well-being check leads to obstruction of police officer

Officers were called to a well-being check of a female on Highway 1 near Popkum who was walking on the side of the road. A vehicle was located parked in the area and officers suspected it to be related to the check-wellbeing call. A man was in the driver’s seat stating he had been sprayed with bear spray. As officers dealt with the man, a woman, believed to be the person initially called for, emerged from inside the vehicle. She then exited the vehicle and was exhibiting signs of intoxication. As officers continued their interaction with her, her behaviour became increasingly aggressive, resulting in a physical altercation with the officer.  The woman was arrested for obstructing a police officer and will be appearing in court at a later date. The man was treated for the bear spray and did not have any injuries. Those involved were less than forthcoming with details, leaving officers unable to determine exactly how the bear spray came into the picture.

Single vehicle roll-over collision

Hope RCMP attended a single-vehicle rollover collision on Highway 1 eastbound after reports that a vehicle had flipped onto its roof. Evidence at the scene indicated the vehicle swerved from the passing lane, left the roadway, entered the ditch, and overturned. The driver and three passengers, including two children, were transported to hospital for assessment and treatment. The adult passenger sustained minor injuries. Speed and driver error are believed to be contributing factors in the collision. The driver was found to be operating the vehicle without a valid driver's licence and was issued violation tickets. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Driver suspended for drug impairment

While conducting proactive patrols in Hope, an officer observed a vehicle weaving within its lane on Old Hope Princeton Way. A traffic stop was conducted, and the driver, a Burnaby man known to police, was given a mandatory breath demand. Breath samples indicated the driver had alcohol in his system but was well below the legal limit. However, the officer observed signs consistent with drug impairment. Roadside sobriety testing was conducted, and the driver performed poorly, resulting in a 24-hour driver's licence suspension. Meanwhile, as the passenger was exiting the vehicle, officers observed a substantial quantity of drug paraphernalia, which was seized for destruction. The vehicle was subsequently towed.

Wrong way and wrong turn leads to Highway hazard

An officer travelling on Highway 3 near Peers Creek encountered a disabled semi-truck blocking the slow lane and creating a significant traffic hazard. The driver advised that he was experiencing mechanical issues with the truck's brakes and was unable to get the truck moving again. A tow truck attended and removed the truck from the roadway. Approximately one hour later, police received a report of a semi-truck blocking an exit near the location of the earlier incident. The same officer attended and discovered it was the very same truck. It appears the driver managed to get the semi running again but accidentally headed in the wrong direction. To correct course, he tried turning around at a highway exit, only to back the trailer off the edge of the roadway and become stuck. The driver was issued a violation ticket for driving without due consideration, and the truck was towed a second time to restore the flow of traffic. While everyone appreciates a sequel, this was one officers could have done without.
