File: 2026-PSA Lock Out Auto Crime
Spring has finally sprung and the time has come to get your vitamin D and your steps in the great outdoors! With it, comes a reminder from the Kamloops RCMP Detachment to secure your valuables, but not in your vehicle.
We know it is tempting to leave your purses, wallets, cell phone and other valuables in your vehicle while you get in touch with nature, but you are also tempting thieves.
“We are taking this opportunity to remind our community to leave valuables at home”, states Sandro Piroddi, Kamloops RCMP Detachment, Crime Prevention Coordinator. “Opportunistic thieves will target vehicles parked in trail head/park parking lots and it takes only seconds for them to break in, steal your items and flee.
Generally, theft from vehicle complaints are accompanied by fraudulent activity on your debit or credit cards.
Save yourself the hassle of having to replace identification and credit cards. When and wherever possible leave your valuables at home and only take the essentials you need with you, ideally ones you can carry with you while you are away from your vehicle. When parking, ensure that your vehicle is locked and everything is stored out of sight, including those dollar store sunglasses!
