Uptick in road in use as students head back to school

The Kamloops RCMP Detachment is reminding drivers that school zone speeds return with schools back in session next week.

As students return to school on September 8, 2026, school zones will also return along with an increase in police presence and traffic enforcement. Motorist are encouraged to obey the 30km/hour speed limits that are posted at each end of the school zone from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.

ICBC along with Kamloops RCMP Crime Prevention Volunteers will be conducing a Speed Watch road safety initiative on September 14, at Snine Elementary, as a reminder to drivers to slow down and for all road users to use caution as students return for their first full week of classes.

“The Kamloops RCMP Crime Prevention Unit is reminding the community to slow down, give themselves extra time to get to their destination,” said Corporal Nikola Gajic in charge of the Kamloops RCMP Detachment Crime Prevention Unit. “We are reminding parents to speak with their children and remind them to be aware of their surroundings and to use marked crosswalks when crossing the street.”

Tips for Drivers: 

• Slow down
• Expect the unexpected
• Plan-ahead and allow for extra time
• Obey posted speed limits
• Obey school bus stop sign and flashing red stop lights

Penalties:

• Speed in school zone playground $196-$253
• Fail to stop for school bus $368
• Fail to yield to pedestrian $167
• Disobey school guard/patrol $167
