The Kamloops RCMP Detachment Crime Prevention Unit would like to remind the public to turn on lights, ensure CCTV cameras are working and get into the 9 p.m. routine.

As the days are getting darker earlier, the Kamloops RCMP Detachment Crime Prevention Unit is reminding residents to take a few simple safety precautions, such as turning on outdoor lights, check CCTV systems, locking exterior doors and bringing in valuables.

“Dark areas around the exterior of homes may create opportunities for unwanted activity,” said Corporal Nik Gajic, in charge of the Kamloops RCMP Detachment Crime Prevention Unit.  “We recommend keeping exterior lights on throughout the night, this will also help to compliment potential CCTV footage and provides constant illumination around the home.”

Here are some 9 p.m. Routine tips:

  • Turn on exterior lights
  • Leave an indoor light on
  • Close and secure all doors
  • Complete a perimeter check of your property and secure valuables

Volunteers from the Crime Prevention Unit will be available at information booths throughout the city promoting the 9 p.m. Routine along with placing tip cards on vehicle windshields to reach a wider audience.
