The Kelowna RCMP would like to remind the public that the use of fireworks and firecrackers are illegal in the City of Kelowna unless the user is licensed with the Government of Canada as a Fireworks supervisor at a sanctioned event.

Halloween is quickly approaching and the safety of everyone is the top priority.   The RCMP will conduct increased patrols throughout the city and will be highly visible to help ensure a safe and enjoyable evening.

The City of Kelowna’s Life and Safety Bylaw #10760 prohibit the sale, possession and discharge of fireworks and firecrackers within the City’s borders. This bylaw is enforced by the RCMP, the Kelowna Fire Department and Bylaw Enforcement Officers. Residents caught with fireworks will be subject to fines.

“Our city and surrounding area is still extremely dry,” says Cpl Allison Konsmo, Kelowna RCMP Media Relations Officer.  “Despite the cooler temperatures lately, wooded areas and tall grass are still susceptible to fire, and a firecracker could inadvertently cause a major problem, not to mention that fireworks and firecrackers are prohibited within the city boundary.”

Halloween is a busy night with many children and families on the roadways walking through neighbourhoods. Drivers are reminded to exercise caution, especially during peak trick-or-treating hours. Reduce speed in residential areas and keep an eye out for children crossing the street unexpectedly.

Police ask everyone to celebrate responsibly. Avoid fireworks, unsafe behaviour, report any suspicious activities, and look out for one another. Whether you’re on foot, behind the wheel, or handing out treats, help us ensure a safe and enjoyable evening.

If you witness illegal fireworks activity, the RCMP encourage you to phone the Kelowna Fire Department at 250-469-8577 or City Bylaw at 250-469-8686 to report it.
